I just snorted a Linux

Most of you won't care. But, just in case: I just formatted my C: drive and installed Fedora 8, which is a public open source Linux distribution. This was on my desktop, a '01 Dell Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz 512 MB RAM and a 120 GB / 40 GB hd setup. I previously had 2 XP installations running dual boot, now i have Linux and XP dual. Fedora wants to play right out of the box. Sound, Vid, everything works like a champ. Networking? It's a go. Sees my other XP box without even trying. Even two XP boxes don't play this well together. Am i converted? Yes. Until something goes wrong. Oh yeah, and it's fast.

Note: Does seem to be a little resource needy, in the graphical arena. Hard to tell though, since Vista i'm sure would f-ing kill thing rig. Also, I am downloading package updates and listening to music (which somehow seems to have a higher quality) and copying files. Also, a batch copy that i did with XP (HD to HD) and then re-did (in reverse) with Fedora took about 1/3 as long.

And also, I'm too dumb to install a new program into the GUI. I can only install to command line, and barely at that. It's like going back to DOS.

I can't believe it took you this long to go Linux.

I have a sneaking suspicion you're going to love it. We have a Linux machine set up at work, and we have had just about no problems with it. And like you, we do everything through the command line. It's just easier.

Actually, this wasn't my first Linux rodeo. I had a red hat box in Utah, but only used it for a little while because it lacked the power for GUI. Also had Fedora 6, but was never able to get dual boot to work correctly so i scrapped it. It's come a long way baby.

Sounds like it's almost as good as a Mac

That sounds you just heard was me snorting my coffee out my nose.

Hey JR, what does Fedora cost? Is it the new Red Hat?
